Mit der Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs gedenkt die Princeton University der politischen Bedeutung ihres ehemaligen Universitätspräsidenten (1902-1908) Woodrow Wilson, der später als demokratischer Politiker der 28. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten (1913-1921) wurde und maßgeblich den Völkerbundes am Ende des ersten Weltkrieges vorantrieb. Als Universitätspräsident trieb er Reformen voran und mit Liberalisierungen legte der den Grundstein für den anwährenden Erfolg der Universität bis heute.
Seine offene Unterstützung von Rassen-Segregation hinterließ ein zwiespältige Vermächtnis, das der Anlass für eine Setzung [“Marker”] auf dem Platz vor der Schule war. Dieser bietet die Möglichkeit sich zu informieren und differenzierter über sein Erbe im Zusammenhang mit Princeton’s Motto : “... im Dienste der gesamten Menschheit” zu informieren.
Zeit steht im Vordergrund der Setzung, lässt Sie doch verschiedene Lesarten und Interaktionen zu. Der "Marker" in drei verschiedenen Zeitströmen im Jetzt: (1) Permanent - ein Torbogen, der die Bedeutung des Ortes erhöht und Platz zur Sammlung und Verarbeitung bietet; (2) Ephemer - der "atmosphärische" Mast bringt wiederkehrende Phänomene mit denen er eine erhöhte Wahrnehmung und Bewusstsein schafft; und (3) Zyklisch - werden wiederkehrend Veranstaltungen geboten, welche in der eingeschriebene Fläche die unterschiedlichen Gruppen  innerhalb und außerhalb der Universität zusammenbringt. 
Im Zusammenspiel evoziert das Projekt die Gleichzeitigkeit des Heldenhaften und des Verletzlichen, jenes innere Moment, welches im Streit für Menschenrechten und Inklusion den Menschen und Gesten innewohnt.

Time can be both a measure of reflection and a projective attitude of recognition. By allowing time itself to be directed and marked, through community discussion, awareness and activation, the complex legacy of Woodrow Wilson in relation to Princeton University and beyond is brought to the foreground. While his presence is recurring, if not palpable, on campus, there lacks appropriate didactic and reflective spatial devices that allow for the diverse students and community to interact in moments of respite, resistance and celebration. This proposal, to mark time, acknowledges both the physical struggles for inclusion while attempting to redefine and recenter Princeton “...in the Service of all Humanity.” Spatially, the project acts as a connection, between campus and community, between history and the future, between presence. Serving to both structurally reflect the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs while highlighting its namesake’s accomplishments and shortcomings, this proposal is present, visible, and strong, yet also temporal, ephemeral and interactive. This “marker” marks time in three different time-scales and presence: (1) Permanent- the Archway, increases the sense of place for congregation and healing; (2) Ephemeral- the “atmospheric” mast, alludes to time and recurring phenomena for heightened awareness; and (3) Cyclical, entails recurring events with communities within/ outside the University. In all, this proposal evokes the heroic vulnerability that many embrace in claiming for their rights towards a more inclusive sense of belonging.

Stoa und Gegen-Stoa: Die frontale Positionierung einer neuen akademischen Säulenhalle (alt-gr. “Stoa”), des  Markers, spielt auf die eklektische Überhöhung der Säulen der gegenüberliegenden Woodrow Wilson Schule an. So entsteht eine “Gegen-Stoa” die einen Dialog eröffnet und erinnert, dass es für jeden Schritt vorwärts einen Moment der Verhandlung, Konfrontation und des Dialogs gibt.
Der "Torbogen", den die freigestellte Stoa Struktur erschafft, macht dabei das Heroische und Verwundbare präsent.

Stoa and Counter-Stoa: The frontal position of the new marker relative to the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs alludes to claimed presence. Likewise a counter-stoa in dialogue with the Woodrow Wilson School. This new structure-marker reminds us that for every step forward there is a moment of negotiation, confrontation and dialogue in the assumption of a shared exposure.
This “archway” honors heroic vulnerability.

Der Sonnenbewegung folgend reflektiert der Richt-Spiegel von der Spitze des "atmosphärischen" Mastes das Licht in den Schlagschatten der Woodrow Wilson School of Public und International Affairs. Dieses Licht, weich und schimmernd, das Helle in die Schattenseite von Woodrow Wilsons politischen Positionen.

Following the sun movement, the tracking mirror on the top of the “atmospheric” mast reflects the light onto projected shadow of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on the plaza. This light, soft and fainted, evokes the bright side of the more obscure side of Woodrow Wilson’s political positions

Das Projekt bezieht ein Veranstaltungsprogramm mit ein, welches übers ganze Jahr hinweg für die verschiedenen kreativen Akteure in und um den Universitäts-Campus (Tanz, Gesang usw.) und hier eine Bühne der Interaktion bietet. Aus dem Baubudget werden für einen Veranstaltungszyklus Mittel zurückbehalten, um besonderen historischen Anlässen, die für die Geschichte der sozialen Inklusion (oder Ausgrenzung) der Universität oder der Stadt relevant sind, zu MARKIEREN, hervorzuheben.

This proposal entails the inclusion of programmed events that run throughout the year with the arts communities present in the campus (Dance, singing, etc) and locally. Dedicated funds from the construction budget will be allocated to this cycle of events to commemorate, highlight, MARK particular dates relevant to the history of social inclusion (or exclusion) in the University and town.
